Nevertheless, we’ve done our best to compile a list of the best Scottish viewpoints – and they’re all right here in the North West Highlands!

Here are our top picks of iconic Scottish landscapes and hidden scenery gems:

  1. North West Highlands UNESCO Geopark

  3. Ullapool
  4. The NC500

North West Highlands UNESCO Geopark

We’re kicking off our list with the iconic Northwest Highlands UNESCO Geopark. Frequently referred to as a photographer’s paradise, this world heritage site is right on the doorstep of Kylesku Hotel.

There are several self-guided or group walking tours you can take to explore the 3-billion-year-old rock formations, remote wilderness and breath-taking views. The geopark truly is the epitome of stunning Scottish scenery.

The Assynt Landscape

In the heart of the Geopark is the Assynt landscape, of which we have an ever growing love affair with. With so many beautiful spots in Assynt we couldn’t leave it off this list.

The area is known for its outstanding geology. In amongst the vast landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see, dramatic peaks and hills tower over the grounds, appearing as if from nowhere.

Visit in Autumn to truly experience the uniqueness of this vast Scottish landscape. Come at sunset to watch the sun settle on Quinag hill and see the vivid red and copper light dance against the greenery.

Ullapool

Taking a slight detour from the mountainous terrain, Ullapool is a gorgeous and quaint fishing village with plenty to do and see.

Take a wonder through the village filled with traditional white fisherman cottages and enjoy the peaceful harbour views of the fishing boats resting gently on the water. Stop for a bite of delicious local delicacies before taking a walk up to Rhue Lighthouse or Ullapool’s Hills and Braes – both with great views out to the Outer Hebrides and sea.

The NC500

No list of the most beautiful places in Scotland could be complete without mentioning the North Coast 500. This road trip of a lifetime will take you through some of the most iconic Scottish landscapes.

Make sure to visit the aforementioned Ullapool on your route. Other highlights include, Fairy Glen, Clashnessie Falls, Road to Torridon, Bealach na Bà and Kylesku Bridge.

Sandwood Bay

Walk Highlands once called Sandwood Bay ‘the most beautiful beach in Britain’ and for good reason. The one-mile long stretch of beach boasts huge golden sand dunes and a loch that stairs straight off into the North Atlantic.

The remote bay has no road access and can only be reached by a scenic flat path, making a true unspoilt beauty.

Balnakeil Beach

For our last pick we are nearing the very north of Scotland. Balnakeil Beach is nestled on the west coast of Durness. Another unspoilt beauty, this white sand beach stretches far and wide. With easier access than Sandwood Bay, there are ample opportunities for exploration.

The sand dunes cradle this crescent shaped beach, making it a peaceful retreat. Facing off into the West coast, Balnakeil is known for its spectacular fiery sunsets.
